About us

OUR HISTORY

Wells County Lock-Up is a locally owned and operated self-storage facility in Bluffton, IN. We have served the Wells, Adams, Allen, and Huntington county area over 20 years.

We began construction on our first building in 2000 and grew slowly from there. In 2009, we completed the development of our original location (or so we thought) with 8 buildings totaling 66,000 sq ft, a new office, and an on-site residence. Landlocked, we opened a second location in 2014 — formerly the Swaney-Bardo Chevy dealership — next to Bummie’s, which now has 6 buildings totaling 30,000 sq ft.

In 2021, we added an “unexpected” 9th building to our original location. By rerouting the underground water draining and filling an old and underused retention pond (with 200+ dump truck loads of fill dirt), we created space for 1 additional full-length building.

In 2022 we opened a mixed-use Boat & RV self-storage facility just south of Kroger, on the corner of IN-1 and State St.

The antique brick at the front of our facility was re-purposed from the Red Cross Manufacturing Company building and a number of one-room school houses in the Northeast, Indiana area. The base material of the stone drive at our second location is composed of recycled asphalt from the implement dealership which was torn down to make room for the new facility.
